FRACTAIS TROPICAIS

Forthcoming feature-length film (Fiction, 2025)

Synopsis

Whispers in the middle of outer space. A small crew of Brazilian archivists on board a biodome spaceship tend to a collection of Earth’s living remnants and their digitized copies. An intelligent system, the Digital Museum of Humankind, becomes a portal into the crew’s diaries and the fractured archive of what has been lost. In this apocalyptic fable told between the vastness of the universe and a planet Earth in ruins, a lone wanderer, perhaps the last man on Earth, roams a more familiar environment. Sounds and images collide replicas and their originals in a fractal dimension like waves crashing on the shoreline, transforming into galaxies.

Director's Note

Fractais Tropicias is my first feature-length film, and like many first features, I believe it to be a statement—an invitation to think through a different mode of production and expression towards the making of a cinema that I would love to see in the world. Assembling it as a fractal meditation on the current environmental preservation techniques and collective anxieties of my generation, I wanted to make a film that also allows for space for wandering. One that allows for images of the real and the fictional to shape the question of what world and ideas the future will inherit.

In the process of deconstructing the genre of science fiction in which highly polished CGI and crystalline images have dominated, I wanted my film to feel like its sounds and images were carved by hand and eroded with time like real things, like birds, plants, metal, and celluloid film that get processed, archived, and sit on shelves for the rest of the life of those who archived them.
